“Marc and Mary are project delivery managers at a large asset management company. On a typical year, Marc and Mary, and their respective teams, put out over 110 individual tenders comprising over $300M of built work.
In the pre-tender phase, Marc and Mary’s days are wall-to-wall spreadsheets, word documents, PDF’s and some questionably legible scrawled notes. Days composing tenders, assessing potential contractors and partners, and consuming immense amounts of coffee.
Marc and Mary estimate that the complexity and haphazardness of this stage of the procurement process wastes a huge amount of their time. They both believe that this wastage in time-cost equates to around 1% of their total tender values. In the case of Marc and Mary, that’s $3M a year. Every. Single. Year.
For the $140B Australian construction industry, we estimate at least 60% of the procurement activity is affected by this haphazard approach, and we feel this is a very low-hanging fruit. Ultimately, we believe this to be a 0.5% margin improvement for tenderer’s, or $420M opportunity…
The problem is clear, and there is clearly a lot at stake. The procurement scene is opaque, onerous, and heartbreaking. Marc and Mary, and tenderer’s like them need a match-maker to help them find the best people for the job as efficiently as possible. And those great people need a match-maker to find Marc and Mary.
If only it were as simple as swiping left and right on a diverse but intelligently curated list of verified vendors that have the requisite scale, compliance and capacity to tender for your job!
If only it were as simple as swiping left and right on diverse but curated list of verified EOI’s that match your program, sector and capabilities!
It’s simple. We need a Tinder for tender. We need Tender.”
The transcript above was the narrative lead-in for our pitch at Constructathon 2019; a fantastic, first-time event that was sponsored, endorsed and hosted by the below organisations. The two-day idea sprint was held at Google HQ in Pyrmont, Sydney over the 23rd-24th August.
The pitch involved the production of a huge amount of ideas, material, and insights from all team members. If you are curious to know more about the concept, know of someone who would be interested in the idea, or are intrigued yourself — send us a message!
Note: Full disclosure, our pitch didn’t win on the day. It seems the judges just weren’t sympathetic enough to those lonely tenderer’s and tenderee’s out there… guess they must be comfortable in their committed, long term relationships…
